GBW Spring 1979

Spring 1979

Oil on Canvas - 2'X3'. This is the first of an on going series exploring the quality of light. While attending art school in 1976 these Glass Blocks came to my attention. I saw them as a perfect vehicle, allowing me to express how I believe we perceive the world abstractly all the time. Having decided to focus on subject matter that allowed me to study light and figure ground painting as any traditional oil painter would, I still wanted the end result to appear as a pure abstraction at first glance. The way the Glass Blocks reflect light and distort the environment on the other side became a perfect metaphor and a perfect subject for my paintings.
