Bear Paints Shield

Bear Paints Shield

Mixed Media. 30"X42". The Bear is the animal dreamer, and guardian of the ice and snow. His dreams from the spirit world are his inspiration for his artwork. He uses Paint bags rather than tobacco bags, art is his means of giving offerings to the great spirit. The claw is his mark, the sacrifice he leaves for the earth's gifts. His artwork sends messages from the spiritual world to the physical world. The barred feathers represent the great horned owl, his friend and messenger between the spirit world and physical world. The circle represents Mother Earth the provider of his pigment, the points represent the Sun the provider of light and color.

This specific shield from the exhibition Heart of the North (The Raven Gallery) was my creation as part of the Wolf Feather group. This was a traveling exhibit of eight contemporary shield designs publicized as Contemporary paintings on rawhide that the Raven Gallery organized and managed.
