Red Hot

Red Hot Transmutations

Oil on Canvas. 3.5'X7'. This mapping from my exhibition "Transmutations". It pushes my stylistic expression clearly towards what art critics call "MezzoAmerican". This painting explores the tension between the freedom of the under painting brush strokes against the heavy (red impasto) field. This juxtaposition causes the eye to go from figure to ground back to figure. Spacial relationships become obscure, the figure melts into the red field and becomes a vast emptiness, thgen as your eyes move inward th figure reshapes into a ghostly shillouette. Like the Phoenix raising out of the ashes this piece keeps being reborn as you are drawn into and pushed back out of it's rich textures and lush but sparce color. "What first looks like figure becomes a vast space engaulfed in flames, then a moment later it's a ghostly figure floating on a sea of blood."
